What to review

The questions that matter

How an umbrella works

A personal umbrella adds liability limits, commonly in $1 million increments, that apply after the liability limits of your auto and home policies are used up. Some umbrellas also cover certain claims those policies don't, after a retained amount you pay first.

What it needs underneath

Insurers require minimum liability limits on your underlying auto, home and other policies. If an underlying policy lapses or carries lower limits, you may have to pay the difference yourself.

Who and what to list

Household members, teen drivers, rental properties, boats and recreational vehicles all affect an umbrella. Each exposure should be listed or confirmed.

Common exclusions

Typical exclusions include business pursuits, intentional acts, and some watercraft, aircraft and vehicles unless they're listed. Exclusions vary by insurer.

Illustrative example

a serious car accident

A driver in your household causes an accident that seriously injures another person, and the claim exceeds the auto policy's liability limit. After the auto policy pays its limit, the umbrella can respond to the remaining covered amount, up to its own limit. Without it, the excess would be the household's responsibility. A real claim depends on the facts, the policies and the law.

What to prepare

  • Your current auto, home, condo or renters declarations pages, to check the underlying limits
  • Drivers in the household, including teen drivers
  • Properties you own or rent out
  • Boats, motorcycles and recreational vehicles
  • Pools, trampolines or dogs on the property

Questions people ask

Quick answers

  • There's no single answer. Consider what you could lose in a judgment and your household's exposures, then compare a few limit options.
  • Usually not. Personal umbrellas commonly exclude business activities; a business needs its own liability coverage, and possibly a commercial umbrella.
  • Possibly. Umbrellas require minimum underlying liability limits, so your auto or home limits may need to increase.
