Auto Insurance

For individuals and households insuring cars, trucks and SUVs they drive for personal use: commuting, errands and travel. If a vehicle is owned by a business, or used for deliveries, rideshare or other paid driving, see commercial auto, because personal policies may limit or exclude those uses.

What to review

The questions that matter

Liability coverage

Pays for injury and property damage you cause to others in an accident, up to your limits, and usually your legal defense. It's the part every state requires. In Washington the minimum is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage; Idaho, Oregon and Arizona set their own minimums.

Collision and comprehensive

Collision pays to repair your own vehicle after a crash. Comprehensive covers theft, vandalism, fire, weather, falling objects and animal strikes. Both generally pay up to the vehicle's actual cash value, minus your deductible, unless your policy includes a replacement option.

Personal injury protection and medical payments

Personal injury protection (PIP) pays medical expenses and some lost income for you and your passengers regardless of fault, depending on the state and the policy. In Washington, insurers must offer PIP, and the named insured can reject it in writing.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Pays for your injuries, and in some policies your vehicle damage, when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. In Washington, insurers must offer underinsured motorist coverage, and it can be rejected only in writing.

Rental, roadside and gap

Rental reimbursement pays toward a rental car while yours is repaired after a covered loss, up to a daily and total limit. Roadside assistance covers towing and similar help. Loan or lease gap coverage pays the difference between your car's actual cash value and what you still owe if it's totaled.

Who and what is covered

List every licensed driver in the household and how each vehicle is used. Policies define who counts as an insured driver and can treat excluded drivers, borrowed cars and business use differently.

Illustrative example

a parking-lot collision

You back into another car in a parking lot. Your liability coverage can respond to the other driver's repair bill, and your collision coverage, if you carry it, can pay to repair your own car after your deductible. If you had dropped collision on an older car, your own repair would be yours to pay. A real claim depends on the facts, your policy and state law.

What to prepare

  • Each driver's name and date of birth (license numbers go to your advisor directly, not into a web form)
  • Year, make and model of each vehicle, and the VIN if it's handy
  • How each vehicle is used and roughly how far it's driven each year
  • Your current policy's declarations page, if you have one
  • Accidents, claims or violations in recent years
  • Any lender or lease requirements for physical damage coverage

Questions people ask

Quick answers

  • Personal auto is written for personal driving. Vehicles owned by a business, or used regularly for deliveries, hauling or carrying people for a fee, usually need commercial coverage or a specific endorsement.
  • "Full coverage" isn't a policy term; it usually means liability plus collision and comprehensive. Lenders and leases often require the physical damage coverages. Otherwise it's your choice, based on the car's value and what you could afford to replace.
  • Common levers are your deductibles, the coverages you carry on older vehicles, the drivers listed and how each vehicle is used. Ask what each change would cost you in coverage, not just what it saves.
  • No. Coverage starts only when an insurer binds it for a stated date and time, confirmed in writing.
