Boat, RV & Motorcycle Insurance

For owners of boats and personal watercraft, motorcycles and off-road vehicles, travel trailers, campers and motorhomes. Each is usually insured on its own policy or endorsement, because home and auto policies cover them only in limited ways, if at all.

What to review

The questions that matter

What your home or auto policy may already cover

A homeowners policy may cover a small boat with low limits and narrow conditions. An auto policy generally doesn't cover a motorcycle or an off-road vehicle. A trailer you tow may get some liability coverage from your auto policy, but not coverage for damage to the trailer itself.

Boats and personal watercraft

A watercraft policy can cover the hull, motor and equipment, liability on the water and, depending on the policy, towing, fuel spills and medical payments.

Motorcycles and off-road vehicles

Motorcycles usually need their own policy, with liability and optional physical damage. Off-road vehicles such as ATVs and dirt bikes may go on a recreational vehicle policy or an endorsement.

RVs, campers and trailers

Motorhomes are insured much like vehicles, with liability and physical damage. Travel trailers and fifth wheels need physical damage coverage for the trailer itself.

Seasonal use and storage

Some policies let you reduce coverage during storage months, and some require specific storage arrangements.

Illustrative example

a trailer in winter storage

A travel trailer in winter storage is damaged when a storm drops a tree on it. Comprehensive physical damage coverage on the trailer can respond, subject to the deductible; your auto policy alone wouldn't cover damage to the trailer itself. A real claim depends on the facts and the policy.

Questions people ask

Quick answers

  • Possibly, with low limits and narrow conditions, and often only for small boats. Larger boats and personal watercraft usually need a watercraft policy.
  • Your auto policy may extend some liability while you tow, but not damage to the trailer itself. A trailer policy or endorsement covers that.
  • Some insurers combine recreational vehicles or offer multi-policy pricing. Compare that with separate policies on equivalent coverage.
