windstormThe week began like every other week. Monday was the usual; half asleep people begrudgingly starting the work week.

Tuesday was no different, but with more of a breeze than usual. Throughout the day, that breeze rapidly grew into something no one saw coming. 50 mph steady winds with gusts surpassing 80-90 mph in some areas completely shut down the city, with everyone rushing home to batten down the hatches and brave out this devastating spectacle with their loved ones. Trees, fences, roofing shingles, trampolines…almost anything not bolted down fell victim to the biggest windstorm our state has ever seen.

Wednesday was the day that REALLY opened our eyes!  With our city (Spokane, Washington) in chaos, the true meaning of community came to life. Family, friends, neighbors and even complete strangers all came together to help and support one another in any and every way possible. With almost 180,000 homes without power, those who were fortunate enough to sustain power opened their arms and doors to those in need of shelter, warmth, a warm shower or a hot meal.

With my family’s experience, our neighbors couldn’t be any more helpful. Last year our neighbor had the misfortune of having their home destroyed by a fire. All of the homes in our block chipped in and made sure the family was taken care of in whatever way they needed. Coincidentally, that family happens to be the only home that kept power after the storm and has been our saving grace. Providing fire wood, candles, hot meals in their home and sharing their electricity, they are happy to help those who helped them in their own time of need.  We gathered together as a neighborhood to have dinner together!

What I learned today, that although this storm has caused an insurmountable amount of destruction, it has also brought communities and neighborhoods closer than ever. Take the time to get to know those around you. You never know when they could be your saving grace.
